Since 1999 Jimmy Behal has been driving taxis in Melbourne. His experience and knowledge made him a leading choice to appear in the Open Doors ad campaign made by the Taxi Service Commission.

This ad campaign focuses on increasing awareness about the rights of passengers travelling with assistance animals such as guide dogs, as well as the legal responsibilities of the taxi drivers transporting them. The main star of these ads is Jimmy Behal, a veteran cabbie who has 18 years of experience driving through Melbourne’s Western suburbs.

Wanting to raise awareness of the legal responsibilities of taxi drivers when assisting passengers, Jimmy became involved in the campaign. His goal is to make all passengers, including those requiring assistance animals, feel comfortable during their journey.

“Some cabbies are not aware of these legal responsibilities, and sometimes refuse to take passengers who are accompanied by assistance dogs� said Jimmy. “Through this campaign we are trying to make drivers more and responsive to the passenger’s needs.�

In the ad, Jimmy transports Maysa, and her assistance animal, to and from her judo lesson. This video highlights just one aspect of Maysa’s daily schedule and how a taxi drive who understands their responsibilities helps make her day easier.

SBS Punjabi also asked Jimmy if he had faced racial vilification during his 18 years behind the wheel. Jimmy said that he never felt he was a target for racial discrimination or comments from any of his passengers.
